SMSS morning devotion 21 oct 2005
Someone shared with me that one of the parents gave a very interesting morning devotion 2 days about handling influences in our lives, and I also remembered Dorothy sharing with us 2-3 months back during devotion about the bad effect of music, showing us how certain music are not good and even evil, sharing with us about backward masking and how certain song when play backwards, contained satan-worship lyric.
You know, girls, there's something about songs that is very strange. Have you ever had a song that is stuck in your head for the entire day? For example, for a period of time, the song by James Blunt, "You're beautiful" kept popping up wherever I went, it was on the radio, the TV ads, the lyrics was on one of your msn's nic recently, even when I was on the taxi, the uncle's hand phone ring tone was “you're beautiful, it's true” and there was this boy who just finished his PSLE and he was in the office 2 days back, and while waiting he plugged on to his mp3 player and started singing “You're beautiful”. This song was there everywhere I went and I'm sure you know what I mean, that somehow songs have a special effect on people.
I'm pretty sure that there should be some of us here who knows the song, it’s a very popular children song and the title is "Jesus loves me this I know".
I think I've heard this song in the 6 different languages, English, Tamil, Bahasa Indonesia, Tagalong, Khmer and in Mandarin.
This song was written in 1860, by Anna B. Warner because her sister Susan had asked her to write a song which she could sing and comfort a dying boy. And so, Anna wrote a song about God’s comforting promise of his everlasting love for us and it goes like this.
" Jesus loves me! This I know,
For the Bible tells me so.
Little ones to Him belong;
They are weak, but He is strong.
Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me!
The Bible tells me so. "
We sing this song in Loving JOY, a children club whereby there’s tuition, games and club time. And the children love singing this song because at the chorus, we’ll tell them to sing loud and with all their heart, "Yes! Jesus loves me."
The children are cute when they do that.
I believe that this song has touched many people's lives and I’ll like to share with you 2 true stories about it.
In Loving JOY, I know of this little girl called Shu Qi. And I heard from her mom that once, she was being caned by her dad for something wrong she did. And she, of course, like many other children, she cried. She was asked to go and bathe. And you know what happened? She sat in her bathtub, and while smoothing the cane marks on her hands and legs, she sang this song in between sobs to comfort herself. "Yes, Jesus loves me this I know". I was so amused and very encouraged when I heard this.
Shu qi passed away about 1 year back, she had some liver infection which just took away her life very suddenly. She was then, just 5 years old. But one thing I know is that she is safe in arms of God because Jesus loves her, that she knows.
The other true story which I would like to share is about this lady whom I met at the Bible college which I’m studying at. Her name is Auntie Serena and from the very first time I met her, we clicked on very well with each other. On the very day when I met her, we had lunch and I asked her how she came to know about God and how she accepted Jesus as her Savior. Her reply really struck me because through that, I knew that this lady had gone through a lot in her life. She said this "when I lost my son, God showed me that He gave me His"
Serena had a son, and like many other guys, they served in National Service. And what happens is that when NS guys are about to finish their training, they have this last training whereby they all have to do this long 10km quick march in their full soldier gear.
Serena's son, then was 19 years old and he was about to finish his national service training and he had completed his 10 km walk. He has flat feet and after the long quick march, he knees hurt very badly and so he was brought to the hospital. On his way there, the ambulance met with a very nasty accident and Serena's son got badly injured and he slipped into a coma.
At that point of time, Serena was not a Christian. She was devastated and her heart ached so much to see her dear son, lying in coma. She talked to him constantly. During that very difficult period of time, she remembered that her son had once asked her if he could a Christian because as a small boy, he had attended a Christian kindergarten. Serena told him that she would allow him when he gets older. As a child, he would keep singing the song "Jesus loves me this I know." During that time when he was in coma, being the only song that Serena knows, she kept singing this song to him.
Subsequently, Serena’s son passed away and Serena found her comfort in God and accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior. Serena knows that one day, they will see each other in heaven. When Serena lost her son, God show her His love by giving her His Son.
Personally, I am very touched by the Lord whenever I sing or hear this song, especially when I know that God has used this song to touch 2 people I know. I hope that it will touch your heart too.

Chinese Cinderella
took leave last friday and spent the entire afternoon at TTC library reading.. haa.. supposed to read my church history notes & revise greek but ended up reading "Chinese Cinderella" :) a really intriguing and inspiring book about an unwanted girl who eventhough faced many oppositions from her family (esp her stepmom), emerged strong and resilient.
btw, according to the authoress, adeline yen mah, i learnt that actually someone in china had already written the cinderella story many many years before the Charles Perrault (French guy)
totally cool book.. going to read falling leaves next

humility
recently came across this passage in an article while doing church history papers.. think it's really meaningful :) here it goes..
"What Benedict (a monk) is telling us is that true humility is simply a measure of the self that is taken without exaggerated perfection or exaggerated guilt. Humility is the ability to know ourselves as God knows us and to know that it is the little we are that is precisely our claim on God.
Humility is, then, the foundation for our relationship with God, our connectedness to others, our acceptance of ourselves, our way of using the goods of the earth and even our way of walking through the world, without arrogance, without domination, without scorn, without put-downs, without disdain, without self-centeredness.
The more we know ourselves, the gentler we will be with others.
Now, therefore, after ascending all these steps of humility, we will quickly arrive at the "perfect love" of God which "casts out fear (1 Jn 4:18)." Through this love, all that we once performed with dread, we will now begin to observe without effort, as though naturally, from habit, no longer out of fear of hell, but out of love for Christ, good habit and delight in virtue. All this God will by the Holy Spirit graciously manifest in us now cleansed of vices and sins.
The chapter on humility is a strangely wonderful and intriguingly distressing treatise on the process of the spiritual life. It does not say, "Be perfect." It says, "Be honest about what you are and you will come to know God." It does not say, "Be flawless and you will earn God."
